I was honored to be part of the brand refresh of Frisch’s Big Boy, an iconic American brand.
The challenge was to update the brand and marketing materials without losing any of the original “Big Boy” charm. This project lasted over 18 months and involved everything from quarterly menu updates, campaigns, billboards, fifty store remodels, and an eight-foot statue that is permanently installed in Cincinnatti’s Reds Stadium.
The work shown includes Billboards, Brand Guidelines, Menus, The Frisch’s Nutcracker Sponsorship, and The Reds Stadium Statue redesign.
I love working with clients to brand and rebrand their company, products, and services. A huge part of that process and the cornerstone of their brand is the logo. The process of branding and rebranding is the same, trying to capture what they do, what they stand for, and who they are. I believe there is a huge difference between a font or a picture and an actual logo.
I was born in Houston, Texas, and I currently reside there. If you work here, you’ll undoubtedly be involved in energy, healthcare, and maybe even aerospace. My husband is a singer, songwriter, musician, and music business entrepreneur, so once we got married, we were off to Los Angeles. In LA, you are going to work in entertainment. I worked on branding companies, events, and artists. When I first arrived, I worked the night shift of an old school typesetting studio. Is it redundant to say that it’s exciting creating advertising for entertainment?
My Aunt Judy was a designer in the “Mad Men” days of advertising and seeing her work along with the life she lived made me want to join the ranks of the creatives. There are few things more exciting than a food photoshoot or creating a series of branded holiday campaigns. It’s also hard to beat the pride of being part of an effort that increases sales by 50%. I love what I do and working with and for those who share a passion for advertising.
After more than a decade in Los Angeles, I returned home to Houston to be close to extended family and to finish raising my own. I signed up with a placement agency and one of the first opportunities was to become the Creative Services Manager at Schlumberger. During my time there I was in charge of expanding the internal team and creating new identity guidelines to be used throughout the entire company. The highlights of my time there included presenting the guidelines in Paris directly to the global management team and leading an amazing group of 22 direct reports.
After leaving Schlumberger I accepted a similar position with Weatherford where in addition to being in charge of new identity guidelines my team also created numerous worldwide campaigns and updated all of the tradeshow materials including the Weatherford booth. In addition, we worked with outside an outside agency to update their entire web presence including the company website.
After starting my own agency I continue to work in the energy sector for and with multiple companies and agencies.
I have always enjoyed creating marketing materials for corporate B2B projects whether working directory working for Henderson on their branding and identity guidelines or for great agencies like the BrightLeaf Group and The Philips Agency. I was honored to be a part of the Business Marketing Association board including spending a two-year term as its’ president. I have learned so much from working in such diverse business sectors as energy, healthcare, financial services education, and transportation.
Without a doubt, the one person who had the most significant effect on my career was Keith Chambers from the Chambers Group. The company specialized in branding, positioning, and product development for consumer packaged goods. It was there that I learned the art of branding and discovered my love for the detail involved in package design and production.
I was initially hired to design the private label packaging for a small supermarket chain. I went from a Designer to Production Manager, and finally the Studio Manager. I experienced all of the positions from being part of the team to growing the team, and ultimately leading the team.
We worked for huge clients like Con Agra, 3M, and Hormel, and we even created packaging for the original Orville Redenbacher Microwave popcorn launch.
Since then, I have designed everything from displays, shippers, and even floor positioned advertising. But getting to redesign the Hunts Ketchup label and then going on a press check to approve a run of five million is an experience I will never forget.
